Thus, installing a sump pump backup system is very capable of making a difference amidst a dry and a flooded basement. Sump issues are normally caused by power loss, fractured foundations, malfunctions and sump clogs.

Sump pump backup systems are commonly used in their battery backup sump pump system form. It will apply or utilize a wet battery cell which requires periodic charging. Generally, battery backup sump pumps have an alert system which will automatically detect any malfunction or if maintenance is needed in the system. Furthermore, dry cell batteries are highly capable of a 10-hour operational limit, should any malfunction occur. But, if you will use wet cell batteries, you need to schedule regular maintenance for your sump pump.

How to Restore Your Home after Flooding

Hurricanes and typhoons are always bad news. They bring nothing but strong winds, heavy rainfall, inevitable property damage, and a risk to people’s lives. Downed trees and electric posts litter the streets after gusty winds have blown through a town. But even when the winds are gone, flood water often stays. And it can possibly do so for days. This can leave roads, vehicles, buildings, and homes submerged in flood water.

Flooded homes aren’t a rare occurrence, unfortunately. This is especially true for tropical countries such as the Philippines. Countries classified as such are hit by typhoons almost all year round. But countries like the Unites States aren’t exempted from such undesirable instances as illustrated by the infamous Hurricane Katrina a few years ago. It is known as one of the worst disasters to hit the country. It was recorded to be one of the five deadliest hurricanes in American history; the costliest one as well. It left 80% of New Orleans under water. The damage was severe, and we could only hope that such a catastrophe would never happen again.

Hurricanes like Katrina may come only once in a long period of time, but hurricanes and typhoons do still drop by. And the odds of flooding are always there. When it happens to you, the family’s (including pets) safety is the chief concern. Once that has been secured, the worry over personal property comes next. The extent of damage on the home and which pieces of furniture and electronics can be salvaged are probably are some of the concerns on the minds of those affected by flood water.

With this article, I intend to guide you on how to clean up your house, restore your furniture, and to save electronics such as cameras, cell phones and iPods after a flooding. Hopefully, I can make the home restoration process somewhat lighter for you.

Getting flood water off of your home

Depending on the extent of the flooding, you can opt for any of the following:

  • If only puddles of water made it into your home, straightforward mopping would obviously be sufficient.
  • For anything more than that, a wet vacuum is ideal.
  • You can employ the use of a sump pump if your basement is breached by floods. Bear in mind though that your basement is flooded, which means that you probably won’t be able to access the existing drains in your basement. What you can do is to utilize a long hose to affix to the sump pump so that you can get the flood waters away from your home.

You can then dry your home using a heater system (only if it wasn’t affected by flood water, of course.) Speed up the process by using fans to circulate air. Just make sure that the air is blown out of the room, instead of into it, to prevent mold and mildew from arising.

Furniture restoration

You would think that your furniture is now only good for scrap wood once it has been drenched in flood water. But it isn’t always the case; most of the time, it isn’t really that bad. Below are the steps to take in order to remedy your wet furniture.

1) Dry it, of course. If possible, let it bask in the sun. If not, put it in a room with good air circulation. You can also enlist the services of an electric fan.

2) Get rid of mildew. Black spots signal the formation of these. This means that water was able to penetrate into the wood’s finish. What you should do is to do away with the finish, clean the mildew with a bleach solution, and replace the finish with a new one.

3) Remove the white spots. If you see these, mix an equal solution of baking soda and toothpaste. You should then get a wet cloth, dip it in the solution, and rub it all over the white spots. Lastly, polish it dry using a piece of cloth.

4) Return the furniture’s veneer to good condition. Flood water may leave the veneer disfigured. To refurbish it, apply moisturizer to soak the veneer until it becomes flat again. Polish it dry after. You can then use veneer glue (with the aid of a syringe) to leave it looking like new.

Save your gadgets

You would most likely give up on your cell phone, iPod, or camera, when you see it come into contact with a good amount of water. But depending on the amount, you should never say “never”. That’s what Justin Bieber would say, at least. So assess the damage, and try these:

1) Turn the gadget off. This is imperative. Don’t try turning it on until it is COMPLETELY dry.

2) After doing as stated above, dry the gadget as soon as possible. I would recommend leaving it in a rice box/dispenser for up to a whole week, just to be safe. Don’t try to turn on the gadget beforehand; and your patience may reward you.

3) You could use a hairdryer if the water exposure of the gadget was only minimal. Keep in mind though that you should only be using the hairdryer’s lowest setting since higher settings may cause water to be pushed away into other areas of the gadget; thus possibly leading to worse complications.

Getting your home to the way it was can be challenging after being hit by floods; but you should remember that all is not lost. A bit of work, effort, and patience may be required in this endeavor, but I’m sure you’ll pull be able to pull through.

Waterproofing A Deck — A Smart Choice!

Waterproofing your deck is a perfect choice when you want to preserve the color of the wood on your deck. Waterproofing your deck simply means preventing water from seeping into the wood.  Once the water starts to seep into the wood, expect it to rot and erode as a consequence. So if you don’t want that to happen to your deck, waterproofing your deck is your best bet.

Before you proceed to the procedures on how to properly waterproof your deck, take time out first to read on the general facts about deck waterproofing.

The two natural elements that are accountable for rotted and damaged decks are the ultraviolet rays of the sun and, of course, water. When the wood is heavily exposed to ultraviolet rays, the wood easily gets old as time passes. On the other hand, water will also cause the wood to rot and lose its strength. These two natural elements have the common denominator of destroying the wood thus making it lose its beauty. That is why waterproofing your deck is the answer to these issues.

The waterproofing system actually has several types. For residential decks, clear or colored stains and sealers are frequently used. You can choose from a water-based or an oil-based type of sealer. Another option is the solid stain and paint. Although this needs higher maintenance, expect better results. When it comes to apartment building decks, epoxy coating is the perfect choice. Utilizing epoxy for deck coatings is expensive and time consuming; however, with epoxy coatings, rest assured that it will last longer.

Now, here are the steps on how to waterproof your deck:

  1. Clean your deck using a deck cleaning solution. You can simply buy it from a store located in your area. You can also find good choices from the hardware and home improvement stores.

Warning: Make sure that you have read carefully and followed the instructions stated by its manufacturer properly.  Make sure as well to take note of the type of wood of your deck; and use the precise cleaner to avoid mistakes.

  1. Pressure washer can also be utilized for cleaning your deck, with the condition that a low water pressure will be used. Once the pressure is high, you should stop using it to avoid damage on the wood.
  2. Once the deck cleaning is done, ensure that the wood is totally dry. Once it is totally dried, you can then paint the wood using the water-repelling sealant. You can choose from either brush or roller paint pad to be utilized when applying the water-repellent sealant.
  3. Always wear safety glasses, long sleeves and gloves while doing the whole deck waterproofing procedures. This is very important for your protection.

Waterproofing your deck is not an easy decision to make. There are other important factors you need to consider when waterproofing your deck. One of which is how to choose the best sealant for deck waterproofing. When choosing the best sealant for your deck waterproofing, it is your responsibility to check the label of the product that indicates if the product has passed local waterproofing standards.

Other than that, consider the geography before starting your deck waterproofing process. In case you happen to start your job under a wet climate, you must apply more sealer for a successful job. The more sealer is placed, the better. But if you do it during a hot weather, you must prioritize protecting your deck from ultraviolet rays of the sun. Tinted sealer is the perfect choice under this condition.

Moreover, it is always advisable for you to seek suggestions and opinions from the experts concerning deck waterproofing services.

How Much Humidity Should Be in a House?

Many healthy people don’t give the level of humidity in their homes that much thought.  How about you?  Do you happen to have difficulties in breathing?  So, let me ask you: how is the humidity level in the confines of your home? Chances are, you are having humidity problems.

Get hold of a humidity sensor or relative humidity indicator right away, or just use the instrument more popularly known as the hygrometer. It is the only way to find out for sure if you’re running into some extreme humidity levels inside your house.  Too little humidity might be the root cause of your breathing problems. Well, if you don’t want to run out of breath, it’s high time to check the humidity level of your home.

Sources of Humidity Indoors
Humidity is defined as the amount of water vapor or moisture that is contained in the air.  Indoors, humidity can come from the following sources:

  • People who come and go; plants and pets — one person staying in the house for 24 hours gives off about 1-1/2 gallons of moisture just by breathing.
  • Taking showers – - each shower routine produces about ½ pint of moisture into the air. Imagine how much moisture a household of eight can release into the air, if they take a shower twice a day.
  • Cooking and dishwashing — about one pint of moisture is produced per meal.
  • From high humidity levels outside the house.
  • Dirt floors not covered by a moisture barrier can seep through the soil into a home and can be aggravated by water that leaks into basements.
  • Other household activities that involve water like cleaning, scrubbing, laundry done inside, and hanging wet clothes inside, etc.

When Does Humidity Become A Problem Indoors?

The following manifestations can arise as a result of these two extreme humidity conditions as follows:

  • Excessive humidity
    • Patches of condensed moisture on glass windows and glass partitions
    • Blotches of wet stains on walls and ceilings
    • Bathroom walls that are tainted with molds
    • Strong, musty odor
    • Asthma and allergic outbursts
    • Deteriorating parts of the house including the furniture and fixtures
  • Extremely little humidity
    • Difficulties in breathing
    • Dry, blistered skin and lips
    • Itchy throat and nose
    • Electronic equipment bog down
    • Serious discomfort

Correcting Extreme Humidity Levels

Fortunately, you can increase or decrease humidity with the help of readily available devices in the market today or by simply doing some easy-to-follow carpentry jobs.  Other measures to fine-tune RH (relative humidity) can even come from little changes in family habits or some innovations on the ventilation set-ups.

Just how much humidity will be just right inside your home is as relative as how you measure it — Relative Humidity, relative in terms of what?  Whether it’s heating time as in winter?  Whether it’s air-conditioning time as in summer? Whether you’re breathing fairly well or not?

When you get home today, ask yourself this question:  Do I feel good? A positive answer simply means that you are basking in the right humidity range. See? Finding your own relative humidity comfort zone is that simple.

For sure, this information is a big help for you, right? Guess it’s time to check your own home before suffering from any mishaps. Prevention is, as always, better than cure; and this is not exception to the rule.  Of course, you don’t want your loved ones to suffer from the consequences of having a poor humidity in your home. Furthermore, nobody wants to see their furniture and their entire house corroded with stains and molds. So, why not check on the humidity levels of your home today?

How to Restore Your Basement After a Heavy Rain

You can no longer be sure of the weather these days.  A blitzkrieg heavy downpour can suddenly flood your basement in a flash.  Climate change has indeed radically altered the complexion of the weather in a queer way. At its worst, the water damage disaster to the basement can be a lot more unnerving than you think. Just make sure that you don’t panic. You need to be calm to get organized.

First Things First

  • Collect yourself and focus. Warn your housemates to stay put.  Don’t rush wading into the water. You can get electrocuted if the water reaches the level of the electrical outlets or electrical appliances at the basement.
  • Turn off the supply of live electricity by shutting off the fuse to the basement. Or you can even totally shut-off electricity in the house for total safety.
  • If the flooding happens at night, get the flashlights out and check their batteries before turning off electricity.

What’s next?

  • Once you’re sure that electricity is off and the rains have stopped, organize your clean-up team or, if you’re alone, put on a pair of long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, rubber boots and gloves to protect yourself from bacteria and molds. You can also wear a mask, if there’s some foul odor in the water.
  • Survey the area to track down where the water is coming from.  If it’s possible to deflect the water to a lower drainage catch somewhere, do it to lessen the volume of water inside.
  • Pick up items that are floating in water, dry them up and bring them to a dry area or hang them somewhere for drying.  This will give you less work when the water recedes.

Get rid of the water

Even after the flooding stops and the water recedes, some isolated ponds of shallow standing water may be found in some areas at the basement. Here’s what you can do to remove the water:

  • Suck up the standing water with a wet-dry shop vac and empty the bin frequently into the sink. A pump that is used to drain a pool can also be effectively used for this purpose.
  • You can use your imagination if you don’t have these two devices at home. Sweeping the water into a dustpan and storing the water in a bucket or in a basin can be one practical solution. Every now and then, empty the bucket down the drain. Or siphon the water out appropriately.
  • Pick up other items that may be scattered around on the floor.  They may need to be washed and cleaned before drying them up.

Mop

You’re half-way through cleaning up the mess.  Now that the standing water does not stand in the way, use a mop to soak up what remains of the water. Keep wringing the mop out in a large bucket until you can’t squeeze any more water. Of course, the basement floor will still be damp as expected.

The Finishing Touches

Open the windows. The skies have cleared up and everything’s going to be fine. Let the air from the outside get in and circulate.  The natural ventilation can do a lot in drying up the floor.  Remember that the concrete underneath the floor tiles is porous and can retain a lot more water than you can imagine. To speed up the drying process, you can run some box fans and let them run until the floor gets totally dried.
Mildew invasion is almost a certainty so pre-empt that eventuality by spraying a lot of Lysol or other similar spray chemicals. Do this immediately right after the water is cleaned up.  Any furniture that got immersed in water that’s too large to move to another place to dry should be wiped dry and should be sprayed with Lysol generously.
There will be lessons learned; and, the next time you’ve got some flooding coming, you will be wiser and, yes, tougher. But finding some professional help may get you more lasting solutions  to your flooding problems. Consider looking into the following :

  • Have the leaks and cracks in your basement walls fixed.
  • Re-design your lot drainage.
  • Improve the effectiveness of the weeping tiles (foundation drains).
  • Thorough unclogging of the connection between your home and the main sewer in the street.

You’ll be getting no more of these messy basement flooding disasters once you’re done with the abovementioned simple tips.  Even when it rains, it won’t pour in your basement anymore!

Muriatic Acid Use

The home needs to be cleaned extensively to ensure that no foreign growth or infestation is taking place. There are a lot of nooks and crannies in the house and who knows what might be lurking in these deep corners? If you are cleaning your home, you should be very particular about how you clean it and with what. For home cleaning, there is a wide array of products and substances which can be used. Many of these have been proven effective, but none of them can be as dangerous, as acidic, and as powerful as muriatic acid.
